How can we help?
Most answers are just below. If yours isn’t, write to us — a real person reads every message.
Getting started
Do I need an account?
As a single user, no: Basket Pal works entirely on your iPhone, without an account.
To share a list with your family — which is what Basket Pal is made for — or to use it on several devices, you need an account. Sign in with Apple or with an email address; everyone you invite signs in with their own account. Whatever you created before signing in is kept and synced.
How does Basket Pal decide what goes on the shopping list?
Each product has a target (how many you like to have at home) and a stock (how many you have now). The quantity to buy is simply the target minus the stock. A product joins the list as soon as its stock drops below the target, and it only appears at the stores where it’s available — or at every store if you didn’t pick any.
What do the red and orange numbers mean?
Red means critical: the stock is at or below the product’s low threshold. Orange means urgent: it’s at or below the medium threshold. Otherwise the number stays in the normal text color. Orange is optional: turn it on or off for each list with Use Medium Watermark in Settings → Lists. With Premium you can set these thresholds yourself, product by product.
Shopping
How do I sort the list by aisle?
Open a product, and under Available at choose its aisle in each store (you can add, rename and reorder aisles right there). Then switch the Shopping list to By aisle at the top. Aisles appear in the order you walk them.
What happens when I tap the checkbox?
One tap cycles need → bought → skipped. Marking a product as bought adds the quantity to your pantry stock; changing your mind takes it back out. A skip simply means “not found here”. Need a different amount? Tap the product name to open it and change How many are you buying right now?
I’m at a store that isn’t in my list.
Pick Other in the store picker. You’ll see everything you need, grouped by category, and your purchases are recorded as an Other trip in the Log. You can add the store properly later with Manage shops…
What about products I only buy in season?
Archive them, a Premium feature: swipe right on the product in the Pantry tab, or use the options of its screen. An archived product leaves your lists but keeps its whole history. To bring it back, turn on Show archived in the Pantry tab and tap Restore.
Can I add a product while I’m in the store?
Yes. Search for it — if it doesn’t exist yet, tap Create “name”. You can even say how many you’re buying right now, and it goes straight into your shopping list for today.
Family sharing
How do I share a list with my family?
Sign in, then go to Settings → List Sharing and send an invite link. When your family member opens it in Basket Pal and signs in, they join the list. You can revoke pending invites and manage members from the same screen.
What does “2 bought by Anna” mean?
It means another member of your list bought that product in the last hour — at your store or another one. The row stays on your list so you understand why the quantity dropped, and you don’t buy it twice.
Can I hide some products from some members?
Yes, with Restricted shopping, a Premium feature: on the product’s screen, tick the members who should see it in their Shopping and Pantry tabs. The Log still shows every purchase to everyone.
What does Premium include, and who gets it?
Premium unlocks the full Basket Pal for your whole list. It belongs to the list, not to one person: turn it on once, and every member gets every feature, on all their devices — nobody else on the list pays.
It includes advanced thresholds, so each product tells you exactly when it’s urgent or critical; receipt pages synced to the whole family; restricted shopping, to show some products only to chosen members; archiving, for products you only buy in season; and tracking trips whose payment isn’t settled yet.
Receipts & prices
How does receipt scanning work?
In the Log tab, open a trip, add one or more receipt pages (camera or photo library) and tap Reconcile Receipt…. Basket Pal reads the receipt on your iPhone, lists every priced line under a crop of the photo, and proposes a product for each. Nothing is saved until you check the matches and tap Confirm.
Why can’t I enter a price yet?
A price is always stored against a variant — the brand and pack size you actually bought. Choose or create the variant first; its size is what lets Basket Pal show the price per kilo, per litre or per piece.
What are the totals at the top of the Log?
Your spending per store: the receipt totals of the last 7 and 30 days, store by store, with a grand total. When some trips are not paid yet, an Unsettled column shows what’s still owed at each store.
How do I keep track of a trip I haven’t paid yet?
Open the trip in the Log and switch off Payment settled (Premium) — handy for a tab at the farmers’ market, or a stall you pay next week. The trip gets an orange card icon and counts in the Unsettled column until you switch it back on.
Does editing the Log change my pantry?
No. The Log is a record of what was bought and what it cost. Your stock only changes from the Shopping tab, the Pantry tab or a product’s screen.
Data & privacy
Where is my data stored?
Once you’re signed in, your lists are stored on our servers so they stay in sync across your devices and with the members you invite. They are protected by access rules — only members of a list can see it — but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Without an account, everything stays on your iPhone. Details are in our privacy policy.
How do I back up or move my data?
Go to Settings → Database → Export to save everything — lists, stock, purchase history, prices, reminders, photos and receipts — in a single JSON file. Import brings it back, either merged with what’s on the phone or as new lists.
How do I delete my account?
First, in Settings → List Sharing, remove the members from the lists you created, and leave every list you joined. Then write to us with the form below, choosing Privacy & data, from the email address of your account (or tell us which one it is). We delete the account and the data synced with it within 30 days. Data stored only on your iPhone goes away when you delete the app.
